Adolescents across Africa—especially in fragile, conflict-affected, and impoverished communities—are falling through the cracks. Despite being a critical demographic for transformation, they face spiritual neglect, social exclusion, and economic vulnerability. Churches and faith communities, though trusted and proximate, are not adequately responding to these needs.
Issues
Limited engagement by faith institutions in adolescent wellbeing beyond spiritual activities.
Lack of awareness and theological grounding among faith leaders to address complex adolescent realities.
Underfunded youth ministries that overlook health, trauma care, and economic empowerment.
Cultural stigma and silence around issues like early pregnancy, HIV, mental health, and disability.
Isolation of churches from broader support systems—missing collaboration with NGOs, schools, and government services.
Adolescents in Africa face unique vulnerabilities and needs.
THEORY OF CHANGE
IF churches and grassroots faith institutions are equipped with strong leadership, theological clarity, resilient systems, and practical tools, AND if adolescents receive holistic support through Adolescent Wellness Centres, THEN faith communities will lead sustainable and impactful missions that help adolescents survive, thrive, and lead because faith institutions are trusted and well-positioned to respond to the complex needs of adolescents and drive lasting change in their communities.

Through its flagship SHE Africa Initiative, FCI Mission Africa seeks to reposition churches and other faith institutions as hubs of adolescent transformation. This means equipping faith leaders with theological clarity, practical tools, and strategic partnerships to serve adolescents in a way that reflects Christ’s compassion and justice.
